Motorola Atrix

Tuesday, 01 February 2011 11:02

The Motorola Atrix is set to be one of the hottest phones of 2011 and also set to mark another milestone in the ongoing evolution of mobile phones. With the introduction of the new Tegra 2 dual core processor from Nvidia mobile phones are starting to approach the processing power that just a few years ago was reserved for top of the line PCs. With an ever increasing amount of hardware power available the question is now being asked, is it possible to use a mobile phone as a computer? The answer to that question is the Motorola Atrix.

While the Atrix works just like any other smartphone available today it also comes with a number of additional docking ports. The most noteworthy of these is the laptop dock, which on first glance is just a standard laptop. However, the device only comes to life when you slot the Atrix into the back, at which point Motorola's new WebTop application is launched through the laptop device. This is a fully functional desktop operating system, with a windowed interface and task manager and able to run desktop applications such as Mozilla Firefox.

The other docking port for the Atrix allows you turn the phone into a multimedia hub. You can connect this to your TV, hi-fi or computer and use it for storing music and video to play through these other devices. The Atrix also comes with a SatNav dock, allowing you to easily place the phone in your car to make use of the navigation software.

Even without these additional docking ports the Motorola Atrix is a phenomenal phone in its own right. As already mentioned it comes with a Tegra 2 dual core processor, as well as 1GB RAM. With microSD memory cards it can provide up to 48GB of storage space for music and video and other content as well. The Atrix also comes with a 5 megapixel camera that includes 720p HD video recording, and the Atrix itself is able to play 1080p HD videos through its 4" capacitive touchscreen. With an HDMI port and DLNA support for Wi-Fi you are provided with another two methods of hooking the Atrix up to your home TV in addition to the multimedia docking port.

The Atrix also comes with excellent music playback and also includes an FM radio with RDS. The phone runs on Android 2.2 (Froyo), but also comes with Motorola's Motoblur interface which comes with built-in integration for social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter providing you with much easier access to your contacts. There is also email and instant messaging, Adobe Flash support and the preinstalled YouTube app allows you to easily stream high quality videos from the popular website.

Even when ignoring the peripheral devices that come with this phone the Motorola Atrix stands out from everything else that is on offer at the moment. Even amongst the new wave of dual core smartphones the Motorola Atrix offers something refreshing and truly unique. And who knows, perhaps even game changing.
